Choosing a Team Fortress 2 Server Host

Updated 24 July 20266 min read

TF2 is cheap to run on paper, so most hosts compete on price alone. Here's what actually separates a good one from a bad one, so you can compare hosts on substance instead of marketing copy.

Server location and ping

TF2's fast-paced classes reward low, consistent ping. If your community is playing from Australia or New Zealand, ask a host exactly which datacentre your server runs on, not just which country the marketing page names.

Plugin support

TF2's community server scene runs almost entirely on SourceMod plugins - custom classes, item restrictions, admin tools. Confirm the host gives you full SourceMod support and file access, not just a locked-down vanilla install.

SourceTV and demo storage

If you're running competitive or scrim servers, check that the host supports SourceTV relays and gives you enough storage to keep match demos - 5 GB covers the base install, but demos and custom maps add up fast.

Backups

Ask how often backups run and how far back they go. Custom configs, plugin settings, and map rotations you've tuned over time aren't something you want to rebuild from scratch after a bad update.

What to look for, at a glance

  • A named, verifiable server location - not just a country flag.
  • Full SourceMod plugin support and file access.
  • SourceTV relay support if you run competitive matches.
  • Storage headroom above 5 GB for demos and custom maps.

Once you know what to look for, comparing hosts takes minutes. See how our Team Fortress 2 plans stack up against that checklist.
