Choosing an ARK: Survival Evolved Server Host

Every ARK host claims to handle big tribes and big maps. Here's what actually separates a good one from a bad one, so you can compare hosts on substance instead of marketing copy.

Server location and ping

Taming and PvP both punish lag - a delayed shot on a running dino or a laggy raid is the difference between winning and losing a base. If your tribe is playing from Australia or New Zealand, ask a host exactly which datacentre your server runs on, not just which country the marketing page names.

RAM for your map and mod list

A single official map with light or no mods runs on 6 GB. Add Steam Workshop mods, a larger map, or link several maps into a cluster, and you'll want closer to 12 GB. Be wary of a host whose cheapest plan undersizes RAM for the map and mod list you're planning - it shows up as rubber-banding during a raid, not on day one.

Cluster support

If your tribe wants to transfer dinos and items between linked maps, check that the host actually supports clustered servers - not every host does, and retrofitting it after your tribe has settled in usually means starting over.

Mod support

Ask whether the host supports Steam Workshop mod installs and whether there's a cap on how many mods you can run at once - a hard cap can quietly rule out a modpack you're planning around.

Backups

Ask how often backups run and how far back they go. A base and tame roster you've built for weeks is not something you want to lose to a bad mod update or a corrupted save - daily backups should be included, not an add-on.

What to look for, at a glance

• A named, verifiable server location - not just a country flag.
• RAM headroom above 6 GB if you're running mods or a larger map.
• Genuine cluster support if you're linking multiple maps.
• No restrictive cap on active Workshop mods.
• Daily backups included in the base plan.
